VIAVI Announces Availability of Base Station and end-to-end Testing for Non-Terrestrial Networks

Viavi Solutions Inc. has recently announced the availability of base station and end-to-end testing that supports Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and High Altitude Platforms (HAPs). This is in response to the increasing use of wireless technologies that augment traditional terrestrial communication networks, with satellite communications playing a major role in providing extended coverage.

The TM500 and TeraVM test platforms from VIAVI are designed to validate the conformance, performance, and reliability of gNodeBs and entire networks under the unique service link conditions of NTN and HAPs networks. The specifications introduced in 3GPP Release 17 have set the framework for NTN support, and further refinements are expected in subsequent releases. These specifications will not only improve the performance of NTN but also ensure compatibility with existing 5G mobile handsets and chipsets.

According to VIAVI’s analysis, the growth in satellite communications will lead to approximately 30,000 new satellites orbiting the Earth, greatly expanding the potential of NTN to provide universal coverage. However, testing the performance and reliability of NTN in 5G brings added complexity. The test solutions need to emulate the unique challenges posed by satellite communications, including the distance, speed, mobility, and large doppler shifts from fast-moving satellites and airborne platforms.

The TM500 and TeraVM test platforms are capable of emulating different UE mobility and fading profiles, as well as taking into consideration the unique conditions of NTN. These platforms can validate the base station prior to non-terrestrial deployment, enabling early functional tests and protocol testing as per 3GPP standards. Additionally, the test scenarios focus on optimizing the network end-to-end using a real core, ensuring the performance and reliability of the entire network.

VIAVI recognizes the potential of NTNs to provide connectivity in underserved and over-populated areas, as well as support mission-critical applications. However, the company emphasizes the importance of proper testing and validation to ensure the reliability, stability, and performance of these networks.

VIAVI is a global provider of network test, monitoring, and assurance solutions. They also specialize in light management technologies for various applications. For more information about VIAVI, visit their website at www.viavisolutions.com.
