US Launches Retaliatory Strikes on Iran-Linked Sites in Syria

The US military has launched airstrikes on two locations in eastern Syria linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. These strikes came in retaliation for a series of drone and missile attacks against US bases and personnel in the region that began last week. The Biden administration has chosen to take action in order to deter future aggression from Iranian-backed groups. The strikes are not aimed at escalating tensions in the region or provoking a wider conflict. According to the Pentagon, there have been at least 12 attacks on American bases and personnel in Iraq, and four in Syria, since October 17. In two of these attacks, drones were used to target al-Asad Airbase in Iraq and al-Tanf Garrison in Syria, injuring 21 American defense force personnel. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that the strikes were meant to send a clear message that the US will not tolerate such attacks and will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests. It is important to note that these strikes are separate from Israel’s war against Hamas and the intention is not to seek a broader conflict. However, the US will not hesitate to take additional action if Iranian proxy groups continue their attacks.
