Tropical Storm Hilary is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Southern California on Sunday and Monday, potentially causing destructive flash flooding and mudslides. Rain totals are expected to range from 2 to 10 inches.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for several areas, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Glendale, Santa Clarita, Lancaster, Palmdale, Indio, Cathedral City, and Palm Desert.

Due to the severe weather conditions, all schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be closed on Monday, with a planned reopening on Tuesday.

Power outages have been reported across the region, affecting more than 7,300 utility customers. Crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

The city of Palm Springs has declared a local state of emergency due to the heavy rainfall and flooding of local roadways. Several roads have been closed in the area due to major flooding.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 shook the Los Angeles area on Sunday afternoon, coinciding with the heavy rain from Tropical Storm Hilary. No tsunami threat has been reported.

The storm has also impacted transportation services. DoorDash has suspended all deliveries in Los Angeles County, and Long Beach Transit has announced the suspension of bus service until Monday morning.

The Ontario Airport has reported flight suspensions by Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines due to the storm. Passengers are advised to check with their respective airlines for updated flight statuses.

The California ISO is closely monitoring the storm’s impact on the power grid, but at this time, the grid remains stable and supply is expected to meet the demand.

Rainfall totals in various areas of Southern California have been recorded, with Palmdale and Newhall receiving over 1.8 inches of rain.

Beachgoers are advised to avoid contact with ocean water for at least 72 hours, as the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued an Ocean Water Use Warning for all L.A. County beaches.

The City of Long Beach has temporarily closed all parks, sports facilities, and most beach parking lots as a precautionary measure. Some locations remain open for sandbag distribution.
