SkyWatch Announces New Integrated Imagery Product Combining Radar and Optical Images

SkyWatch, a satellite data distributor based in Ontario, Canada, has introduced a new product that combines radar and optical images. The company’s platform, EarthCache, provides customers with access to commercial satellite data. There is a growing demand for integrated images that combine visually appealing pictures from optical satellites with data from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites that can see at night and through clouds.

The new service offered by SkyWatch allows EarthCache customers to capture a SAR image of the same area of interest as their optical capture and overlay the data. SAR is beneficial because it can capture images under all weather conditions, making it useful for monitoring and responding to critical events even on cloudy days. David Proulx, Chief Product Officer at SkyWatch, emphasized the importance of SAR in overcoming the challenges of optical capture in various atmospheric conditions.

Furthermore, SkyWatch has partnered with Umbra, a Santa Barbara-based startup, to provide SAR data. Umbra operates a constellation of six radar satellites. SkyWatch’s CEO, James Slifierz, stated that the addition of Umbra’s data to their virtual constellation of over 400 satellites further enhances their ability to help customers solve complex problems.

SkyWatch has been recognized as one of the pioneers in the Earth observation industry, thanks to its web-based, API-first tasking approach. The company has played a crucial role in driving the industry forward into the modern era. Joe Morrison, Vice President of Commercial Experience at Umbra, acknowledged SkyWatch’s early contributions in revolutionizing the Earth observation industry.

By combining radar and optical images, SkyWatch’s new integrated imagery product offers customers a comprehensive view of the Earth’s surface, regardless of weather conditions. This innovative solution allows for better monitoring and analysis, enabling users to make informed decisions and solve complex problems more effectively.
