In the early 1980s, a wave of low-budget imitators emerged in response to the success of Star Wars. Battle Beyond the Stars, produced by Roger Corman, was one such film. It is no secret that director Zack Snyder’s original pitch for a Star Wars movie, Rebel Moon, shares similarities with Battle Beyond the Stars. The recently released teaser trailer for Rebel Moon has revealed even more Star Wars influence, showcasing glowing blue and red swords reminiscent of lightsabers.
The trailer leaves viewers guessing about the plot, but Netflix has already provided a general overview. The story takes place in a universe controlled by the Imperium, with a moon called Veldt on the empire’s outskirts. Veldt has managed to remain independent from Imperium control until now. When enemy forces arrive, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a woman living on Veldt, steps forward to defend her adoptive home. However, she must first gather a team of willing warriors.
Although not evident in the trailer, it is narrated by a robot knight named Jimmy (Anthony Hopkins), who joins Kora’s cause. Djimon Hounsou’s General Titus is another warrior who aligns with Kora, despite their previous allegiances to the Imperium. Other team members include Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot; Tarak (Staz Nair), a blacksmith; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a cyborg; Darrian (Ray Fisher) and Devra Bloodaxe (Cleopatra Coleman), a brother and sister duo; Harmada (Jena Malone), a spider warrior; and Millus (E. Duffy), a refugee. Kora’s friend Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) will also join the fight.
Rebel Moon features Fra Fee as Regent Balisarius, the Imperium’s leader, and Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, her top enforcer. The cast also includes Stuart Martin, Corey Stoll, Cary Elwes, Alfonso Herrera, Rhian Rees, and Ray Porter.
Directed by Zack Snyder and written by Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, and Shay Hatten, Rebel Moon will be released as two parts on Netflix. Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire will debut on December 22, with the sequel, Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver, following on April 19, 2024.
