Projects Using Environmental Satellite Data to Address Climate Challenges

A series of ten innovative projects funded by the UK Space Agency are making use of environmental satellite data to tackle various climate-related issues and promote sustainable growth. These groundbreaking initiatives cover a wide range of applications, including agriculture, energy, finance, and insurance.

The projects aim to identify and mitigate environmental risks, as well as uncover green financing opportunities. The UK’s expertise in Earth observation and satellite technology has played a significant role in supporting these initiatives, allowing for the development and deployment of tools to benefit diverse users.

Each project has received funding of up to £55,000 and focuses on specific environmental aspects such as methane and nitrous oxide emissions, watercourse resilience, biodiversity changes, and decarbonization technologies.

For instance, EOLAS Insight Ltd is developing a service to enhance watercourse resilience, while Omanos Analytics is providing social context data to address the impact of climate change on demographics. These projects showcase the potential of environmental satellite data in safeguarding our planet.

The ten projects represent a concerted effort to utilize environmental satellite data for ecological conservation. They offer innovative solutions to pressing issues and contribute to a sustainable future.

These projects include:
1. Agreed Earth Ltd, Bolton: This project models and monitors nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural lands using Earth observation and machine learning, empowering farmers to understand and reduce their environmental impact.
2. EOLAS Insight Ltd, Glasgow: The project aims to map and report watercourse climate resilience, assisting organizations in understanding the impact of global temperatures on local watercourses and advocating for mitigation strategies.
3. Frontierra, London: This cloud-based service enables corporations and financial institutions to assess their climate impact in a rapid and cost-effective manner, focusing on biodiversity, nature-related risks, dependencies, and opportunities.
4. Map Impact Ltd, Bristol: This project provides a catchment-wide perspective on freshwater management, utilizing various data sources to illustrate climate change and pollution impacts, aid in forecasting events, and safeguard habitat biodiversity and human health.
5. Sparkgeo UK, Edinburgh: Offering automated methane monitoring, this project allows stakeholders to measure and track methane emissions across their domains, triggering alerts when levels exceed acceptable limits.
6. Agtelligence, London: Their FarmScore system incorporates Earth observation data, ground truthing, and a weighted scoring model to assess the environmental impact on farmlands, thereby unlocking green financing opportunities.
7. Omanos Analytics, Glasgow: This project delivers social context data on climate change’s demographic impact, enhancing resilience planning by integrating community narratives and considering factors like land use and traditional livelihoods.
8. Capterio, London: This satellite-enabled tool tracks and reduces gas flaring and methane emissions within the global oil and gas supply chains.
9. GeoSmart Information Ltd, Shrewsbury: Their automated groundwater-level forecasting system utilizes Earth observation to enhance climate change resilience, improving flood and drought management coverage.
10. Stellarsat Ltd, Bristol: This project employs diverse data and AI tools to proactively address exposure risks faced by critical energy infrastructure assets due to climate change-induced physical threats, including electric vehicle charging stations and solar home systems.

These projects demonstrate the significant potential of environmental satellite data in addressing climate challenges and promoting sustainability across various sectors.
