North Korea’s Second Rocket Launch Ends in Failure

The launch of North Korea’s second long-range rocket has ended in failure due to an error that occurred during the three-stage flight of the rocket, according to the country’s state news agency. North Korea’s aerospace agency announced that they will conduct a third attempt in October after identifying the cause of the failure.

This announcement comes shortly after South Korea’s military confirmed that North Korea had indeed launched a long-range rocket.

Back in late May, North Korea’s first attempt to launch a rocket carrying a spy satellite also ended in failure, as the rocket plunged into the sea shortly after lift-off. This setback was a blow to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s ambitions of establishing a space-based surveillance system to enhance monitoring capabilities of the United States and South Korea.

Despite the initial failure, North Korea had vowed to make a second attempt, and now plans for a third attempt have been announced for October. It remains to be seen if the issues that caused the failure will be resolved in time for the next launch.
