North Korea’s Second Attempt to Launch Spy Satellite Fails Due to Rocket Malfunction

North Korea’s second attempt to launch a spy satellite into orbit failed on Thursday. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the failure was caused by a malfunction in the rocket’s third-stage. This unsuccessful launch follows North Korea’s first attempt in May, where the rocket crashed into the sea shortly after liftoff.

According to KCNA, Pyongyang plans to make another launch attempt in October. The most recent launch, which took place on Thursday morning, failed due to an error in the emergency blasting system during the third-stage flight. The rocket broke into multiple parts before falling into the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.

The South Korean military, after examining the debris salvaged from the launch, stated that the design of the satellite was too rudimentary to fulfill its function, even if the launch had been successful. Japan, on the other hand, issued an emergency call for residents of the southern Okinawa region to evacuate, but this call has since been lifted.

In response to the launch, both Japan and South Korea have condemned North Korea’s actions. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Hirokazu Matsuno, called the launch a serious violation of the United Nations Security Council resolution that prohibits the use of ballistic missile technology by North Korea. He stated that Japan would analyze the details of the launch and share them with the public.

South Korea’s National Security Council (NSC) also condemned the launch as a serious violation of the UN Security Council resolution. The NSC expressed its displeasure with North Korea’s reckless provocations and pledged to strengthen cooperation with the United States and Japan to prevent further illegal activities by North Korea.

Meanwhile, North Korea is preparing to celebrate its 75th foundation day on September 9 with a military parade. The success of the satellite launch would have been a significant achievement to mark this occasion. However, with two failed attempts, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s ambitions have been temporarily thwarted.
