Leona Maguire Hopes to Continue Strong Season at ISPS Handa World Invitational

Leona Maguire, currently ranked number 14 in the Rolex world rankings, is looking to build on her successful season as she prepares to compete in the ISPS Handa World Invitational. Despite not performing well in the recent AIG Women’s Open, Maguire is optimistic about her chances for the second half of the season.

Maguire, who secured her second career win on the LPGA Tour in June at the Meijer Classic, sees the remaining tournaments as a bonus opportunity. She wants to enjoy the next few weeks of golf and finish the season strongly.

The ISPS Handa World Invitational is a unique tournament that features separate women’s and men’s tournaments taking place on the same days. It marks the start of a late season that includes two events in Ireland, the ISPS Handa and the KPMG Irish Open, followed by the Solheim Cup in Spain before returning to the United States for the Tour Championship.

This year’s tournament sees a change in venue, with the Castlerock links course replacing the lakeshore Massereene course. Maguire, along with Stephanie Meadow, played a practice round at Castlerock and found it challenging due to the changing weather conditions and semi-blind tee shots.

Maguire emphasized the importance of adapting to different types of courses, particularly links courses, where club selection can vary depending on the wind. She believes that being creative and using imagination is part of the beauty of links golf.

With six top-10 finishes this season, including her win at the Meijer Classic, Maguire has carefully planned her schedule. The ISPS Handa World Invitational is a tournament she has targeted for potential success.

Meanwhile, Séamus Power faces the BMW Championship and the challenge of moving into the top-30 in the FedEx Cup standings to qualify for the Tour Championship.

The ISPS Handa World Invitational offers a total purse of €1.35 million, with €250,000 awarded to each winner. The tournament takes place at Galgorm Castle in County Antrim and Castlerock in County Derry. The men’s event is part of Europe’s Ryder Cup qualifying process, featuring players like Bob MacIntyre and Victor Perez. The women’s event includes players like Stephanie Meadow and Solheim Cupper Georgia Hall.
