Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to Launch Optical Satellite

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has announced its plans to launch a multi-spectral optical satellite on Friday, August 25th. This will be a significant achievement as it is the first time a major university in Hong Kong has launched a satellite. The satellite, known as HKUST-FYBB#1, will be launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu, China, in collaboration with Chang Guang Satellite Technology Company (CGSTL).

The purpose of the satellite is to track remote sensing data relating to the global environment, disaster management, and sustainable development. HKUST aims to eventually create a remote sensing satellite constellation and an all-encompassing environmental monitoring and disaster forecasting system. By combining their scientific research capabilities with CGSTL’s 108 orbiting satellites, the university and the satellite company plan to establish a comprehensive system for monitoring the environment and predicting potential disasters.

HKUST’s vice-president for Institutional Advancement, Wang Yang, expressed his excitement about the satellite launch. He stated that this launch is just the first step towards HKUST’s ambitious goal of building a complete remote sensing satellite constellation. The university aims to develop advanced spatial remote sensing technologies, including innovative carbon monitoring techniques and data analysis tools. With these capabilities, they envision providing services for disaster management, smart city development, and sustainable resource management.

This satellite launch is a significant milestone for HKUST as it ventures into the field of space technology. The university hopes that this project will pave the way for further contributions to remote sensing and environmental research.
