Cyberattack Disrupts Hospital Computer Systems in Multiple States

A cyberattack has caused major disruptions to hospital computer systems in several states, resulting in the closure of emergency rooms and diversion of ambulances. The incident, which began on Thursday, affected healthcare facilities operated by Prospect Medical Holdings in California, Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania.

Upon learning of the attack, Prospect Medical Holdings took its systems offline to protect them and launched an investigation with the help of cybersecurity specialists. The company’s primary focus is on addressing the needs of patients and resolving the issue as quickly as possible.

In Connecticut, Manchester Memorial and Rockville General Hospitals had to close their emergency departments on Thursday, diverting patients to nearby medical centers. The Eastern Connecticut Health Network, which operates these facilities, stated that while the emergency departments reopened later that day, many primary care services remained closed on Friday. The network is individually contacting patients to provide updates.

Similar disruptions were reported at other facilities operated by Prospect Medical Holdings system-wide. Waterbury Hospital in Pennsylvania is following downtime procedures, utilizing paper records until the situation is resolved. IT security experts are working closely with the hospital to resolve the cyberattack swiftly.

The incident has also affected services in Pennsylvania, with hospitals such as Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Taylor Hospital, Delaware County Memorial Hospital, and Springfield Hospital experiencing disruptions, as reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Security experts are currently investigating the extent of the cyberattack and working towards restoring normal operations in the affected healthcare facilities.
