Brazilian Hacker Says Former President Bolsonaro Inquired About Hacking Voting Machines

A Brazilian hacker, Walter Delgatti Neto, testified before a congressional inquiry in Brazil that former President Jair Bolsonaro asked him if he could hack into voting machines. The purpose of the inquiry was to investigate Brazil’s election results and the storming of governmental buildings on January 8, 2023.

According to Delgatti’s testimony to the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI), Bolsonaro offered to pardon him if he faced any legal consequences. Delgatti claimed that Bolsonaro assured him that he would have the judge arrested if Delgatti were to be arrested and that he would receive a pardon if the arrest was related to the electronic voting machine.

Delgatti revealed to the committee members that the plan was to create a fake code for voting machines that would redirect votes from one candidate to another. This was meant to expose the vulnerability of the voting machines. However, the plan did not proceed because the source code for the Brazilian electoral system is kept in a vault room without internet access, making it inaccessible to Delgatti.

Delgatti was recently detained by the Federal Police for breaking into the judiciary system. In response to Delgatti’s testimony, Bolsonaro’s defense team denied any wiretapping or illegal activities against political entities in Brazil.

The testimony comes after Brazil’s highest electoral court barred Bolsonaro from running for political office until 2030 due to his abuse of power and misuse of public media during the previous election campaign. Bolsonaro has denied the allegations and maintains his innocence.

In the aftermath of the January 8 riots, the CPMI was established to investigate the incidents. The riots involved protesters breaking into Brazil’s Congress building, Supreme Court, and the presidential palace, expressing dissatisfaction with the election results that led to the current presidency of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Several cases have been filed against Bolsonaro since he left office.
