Australia’s regulatory body, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), has been actively monitoring the online gambling sector and enforcing bans against operators offering their services illegally. In its latest move, ACMA has called on internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to two illegal offshore gambling websites, Play AUD and Crown Pokies.

ACMA conducted investigations into these websites and found that they were operating in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. As a result, the regulatory agency has urged ISPs to restrict access to these platforms.

Using illegal gambling websites poses risks for users, including the potential compromise of personal data and funds. Australian laws do not protect users of offshore or illegal operators. ACMA has warned that illegal providers may also withhold winnings. The Authority encourages customers to refer to its website for a list of licensed online gambling providers and to report any illegal gambling services.

ACMA has been vigilant in enforcing regulations against illegal offshore gambling operators since 2017. Over 210 companies have voluntarily withdrawn their services from the market in response to ACMA’s initiatives. The Authority has also recently requested ISPs to block access to four other illegal gambling websites. In June, ACMA called for a ban on 12 offshore websites.

ACMA’s proactive measures have proven effective thus far. Since monitoring the online gambling sector, the Authority has banned over 820 illegal gambling affiliates and websites. Continual monitoring and enforcement will ensure a safer and regulated iGaming market in Australia.
