u-blox, a leading company in Internet of Things (IoT) technology, has teamed up with ORBCOMM to create solutions for the convergence of terrestrial and satellite IoT communications markets.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, the number of cellular IoT connections is estimated to reach approximately 5.5 billion by 2028. Additionally, the satellite IoT communications market is expected to triple by 2025. By combining these two technologies, it will be possible to achieve seamless global connectivity for IoT communications, even in areas that were previously underserved. This will make IoT deployment more accessible in various industries.

Through this partnership, u-blox plans to integrate ORBCOMM’s satellite communication protocols into its UBX-R52/S52 LPWA (low-power wide-area) modem SoC (system-on-a-chip). This integration will result in a smaller and less complex chipset that offers dual connectivity. The chipset will be incorporated into future u-blox module products, enabling connected solutions worldwide.

The collaboration between ORBCOMM and u-blox aims to address the growing demand for IoT solutions capable of connecting devices in remote locations, areas with poor cellular coverage, and isolated environments. Industrial IoT applications, such as asset tracking, equipment tracking in agriculture and construction industries, and industrial sensors, can greatly benefit from these solutions.

David Roscoe, ORBCOMM’s executive vice president of satellite communications and products, commented on the partnership, stating that combining ORBCOMM’s satellite technology with u-blox’s innovative UBX-R52/S52 chipset will allow customers in the supply chain, heavy equipment, and agriculture industries to enjoy ubiquitous coverage, device simplicity, and optimal reliability.
