iPhone 14 Pro: A Review after One Year

As September approaches, the highly anticipated iPhone 15 launch draws near. However, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the iPhone 14 lineup, which has been on the market for almost a year. While the base model of the iPhone 14 saw minimal changes, the iPhone 14 Pro stood out as the star of the lineup.

One of the reasons why I continue to use the iPhone 14 Pro is its size. While I appreciate the features of Android devices, many of them are just too large for my liking. The iPhone 14 Pro, with its 6.1-inch display, strikes the right balance for me. Although it’s still slightly larger than I would prefer, I can manage one-handed use with the help of a PopSocket. The weight can be a bit cumbersome after extended use, but it is still more comfortable compared to larger phones.

Another notable feature of the iPhone 14 Pro is the Dynamic Island, which replaces the notch found on previous models. With its ability to adjust in size depending on the app being used, it offers useful status indicators and entertaining features like audio playback and map directions. However, I have found the functionality of the Dynamic Island to be limited, particularly with third-party apps. Hopefully, Apple will expand its usability in the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup.

One area where Apple can improve is camera processing. While the iPhone 14 Pro still serves as my primary smartphone, I have come to realize that Apple no longer leads the pack in photography. The excessive use of computational photography processes can sometimes result in oversharpened and processed images. Unfortunately, this automatic editing cannot be turned off. While shooting in ProRaw format or using third-party camera apps can mitigate this issue, it can be inconvenient in situations that require quick snaps.

When comparing photos taken with the iPhone 14 Pro to those captured by phones like the Google Pixel 7, the natural and appealing results from the latter often win me over. While the iPhone’s camera hardware remains excellent, it’s the software that hampers its performance.

Looking ahead to the iPhone 15 lineup, I hope Apple addresses these concerns and ensures that image quality is not compromised. Offering users the ability to disable excessive computational processing would be a welcome addition. After all, great hardware should be complemented by equally impressive software.

In conclusion, the iPhone 14 Pro has its flaws, but its size, Dynamic Island, and overall performance make it a device worth using. As we eagerly await the release of the iPhone 15, let’s hope Apple takes note of the feedback and strives to provide an even better user experience.
