Vodafone UK and Ericsson Trial Cloud-Based Gaming on 5G Standalone Network

Mobile operator Vodafone UK and network supplier Ericsson have successfully concluded a trial of cloud-based video gaming on their new 5G Standalone (SA) network. The trial took place at Coventry University and compared the gaming experience with standard mobile gaming.

Unlike existing Non-Standalone (NSA) based 5G networks, which rely on slower 4G infrastructure, Standalone (SA) networks are pure end-to-end 5G networks that offer significant improvements in performance. This includes ultra-low latency times, faster upload speeds, network slicing capabilities, better support for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, increased reliability, and enhanced security.

Vodafone recently launched their 5G SA network known as “5G Ultra” in select locations, including parts of London, Manchester, Glasgow, and Cardiff, with more cities to follow. The trial conducted at Coventry University showcased the capabilities of the network in terms of gaming connectivity.

During the trial, participants experienced notable improvements, including a 270% increase in download and upload speeds, a 25% decrease in latency, and a 57% reduction in jitter. Phil Patel, Vodafone’s Group Director of Product and Services, emphasized the potential of 5G Standalone to bring immersive gaming experiences to mobile devices. He stated that this technology opens the door to entirely new types of content and improves the overall customer experience.

With the successful trial, Vodafone and Ericsson are demonstrating their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible with 5G technology. By leveraging the advantages of 5G Standalone networks, the aim is to deliver novel services that were not achievable on previous network generations. Cloud gaming is one example of the innovative applications that can benefit from the higher performance and capabilities of 5G SA networks.

This trial marks an important step in the development of 5G technology and its potential to revolutionize the gaming industry. As 5G Standalone networks continue to expand, more users will be able to enjoy enhanced gaming experiences on their mobile devices, bringing immersive gameplay to a wider audience.
