The Impact of Optus 5G on the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia

The FIFA Women’s World Cup was a massive success in Australia this year, thanks to the impressive performance of the Matildas. However, Optus has revealed that there was an additional unexpected benefit of the tournament: showcasing the potential of 5G technology.

In crowded stadiums, it’s often difficult to get reliable coverage for calls, texts, and internet access. But during the World Cup final at Stadium Australia, which had over 75,000 attendees, Optus customers on 5G plans were able to enjoy download speeds of up to 784 megabits per second (Mbps).

According to Optus, over 48,824 customers were using the telco’s mobile network during the final match between England and Spain. Those on Optus 5G experienced an average download speed of 80Mbps, with peak downloads reaching over 700Mbps. These speeds are higher than the popular NBN 50 speed tier and are comparable to the fastest NBN plans during peak hours.

During the thrilling semi-final match between Australia and England, Optus customers made over 6,830 minutes of voice calls and uploaded 531GB of data. To put it into perspective, this is equivalent to 132,860 photos or 53,144 short HD videos.

Lambo Kanagaratnam, Managing Director of Networks at Optus, expressed pride in supporting not only the Matildas but also the fans who needed reliable network performance during the exciting matches. Fans were able to share their experiences through selfies, videos, and celebrating their team’s victories using Optus’ network.

The impressive network performance in high-traffic locations like stadiums is one of the major advantages of 5G technology. Optus has been investing in mmWave 5G, which offers faster speeds in short distances, to enhance network performance during concerts, festivals, and sporting events.

While some Australians are still hesitant to embrace 5G technology, it is becoming increasingly more accessible and affordable. Telcos like Optus, Telstra, and Vodafone are investing millions in their 5G rollouts, and most smartphones on the Aussie market are now 5G-enabled. With a 5G-ready phone and a mobile plan with 5G access, it’s easy to connect to the 5G network.

Various telcos, including smaller ones, offer 5G coverage with plans starting from per month. Popular brands like Apple, Samsung, Google, and more have 5G-compatible phones available in Australia, providing users with the ability to access the benefits of 5G technology.

Overall, the FIFA Women’s World Cup has not only put women’s sport in the spotlight but has also showcased the potential and impact of 5G technology, particularly in high-traffic locations like stadiums.
