The Fight to Protect Old-Growth Forests: Forest Eye Satellite Tracking System

Dax Dasilva, a tech entrepreneur from Canada, has always been passionate about the environment. His dedication to conservation was sparked during his participation in the famous War in the Woods protests against clearcut logging in Clayoquot Sound when he was only 17 years old. Witnessing the devastating effects of deforestation during a trip across Vancouver Island turned him into an environmentalist.

In 2021, Dasilva founded Age of Union, a nonprofit environmental alliance, with the goal of protecting threatened species and ecosystems. Through this organization, he has invested million in 10 projects worldwide, including initiatives in Peru, Haiti, Trinidad, and the Congo.

One of his latest endeavors is Forest Eye, a satellite tracking system developed in collaboration with the environmental nonprofit Stand.earth. Forest Eye gathers information from provincial satellites and logging permits to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of British Columbia’s old-growth forests. It then sends out alerts to local communities, leaders, and policymakers about relevant activities such as the construction of logging roads or changes in forest cover.

Dasilva strongly believes that once the trees are cut down, they cannot be restored. Forest Eye aims to raise public awareness about old-growth logging and hold policymakers accountable for their promises. Despite the BC NDP’s commitment to implement 14 recommendations to protect old-growth forests, no progress has been made thus far. Thousands of hectares of old growth have been logged, putting these ecosystems at risk.

By providing visibility and real-time information about the state of the forests, Dasilva hopes to empower policymakers, local communities, and Indigenous leaders to take immediate action. Forest Eye has been a personal investment of 0,000 for Dasilva, demonstrating his dedication to the cause.

Old-growth forests play a crucial role in biodiversity preservation and carbon sequestration. Protecting them is essential for the sustainability of our planet. With Forest Eye, Dasilva aims to change the narrative and ensure that the fight for old-growth forests continues until concrete actions are taken to preserve them.
