Telecom Regulatory Commission in Jordan Investigates Price Changes for Mobile Plans

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) in Jordan held a meeting with three mobile network operator companies to address concerns regarding a recent increase in subscription fees for personal prepaid mobile lines. Customers of one particular mobile network operator submitted complaints to the TRC after receiving text messages notifying them of a JD1 increase in subscription fees in exchange for upgraded Internet bundles.

The decision by the operator to raise prices was met with outrage by customers, who criticized the sudden and unjustified nature of the increase. Social media platforms were flooded with posts expressing frustration and dissatisfaction.

In response to these complaints, the TRC issued a statement directing the companies to suspend the price changes, stating that they were in violation of the commission’s directives. While telecommunications companies are allowed to increase prices under Article 53 of the Telecommunications Law, the TRC emphasized the need for coordination and notification.

The three companies involved did notify the TRC of their intention to raise prices by JD1 in exchange for additional internet data. However, some companies implemented the changes before the TRC had completed its review.

During the meeting, the TRC expressed its disapproval of the companies’ actions, and they have promised to rectify the situation. The TRC has directed the companies to reevaluate the changes in subscription plans, and responses are expected by Thursday evening.

The TRC has recommended that if a price increase is necessary, it should only apply to new subscribers. The commission is working to ensure that customers are protected and that any changes to prices are carried out in accordance with regulations.
