Shell Energy Introduces New Wi-Fi 6 Router Made from Recycled Plastics

Customers of broadband and energy provider Shell Energy may be interested to learn that the company has unveiled a new Wi-Fi 6 router that is constructed using 100% recycled plastics. In addition, Shell Energy has plans to release a Wi-Fi 6 signal booster device in the near future.

The core board of the router is powered by Broadcom’s 1.5GHz multi-core CPU (BCM63178), while its DSL chipset uses the BCM6303. For Wi-Fi capabilities, the router employs the BCM6715, enabling it to deliver 802.11ac Release 2 performance (Wi-Fi 6). The router also supports up to WPA3 encryption. It is equipped with 512MB of DDR3 RAM and 515MB of Flash NAND memory.

It is worth noting that the packaging of the router is also 100% recyclable, and Shell Energy sources it from suppliers certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The device features a WPS button, 1 x RJ11 DSL port (VDSL2/FTTC), 4 x Gigabit LAN ports, and 1 x Gigabit LAN port. Although the router includes 1 x BS6312 (British phone socket) and 1 x USB 2.0 port, these features are currently listed as “not supported.” The router supports guest Wi-Fi networks and “intelligent Wi-Fi technology,” which is comparable to most modern Wi-Fi routers.

Shell Energy has hinted at the forthcoming release of a “Shell Energy Wi-Fi 6 booster” device, indicating the possibility of mesh networking capabilities. However, the company has not disclosed the exact launch date or pricing for this device. It remains unclear whether this new router is provided with all packages or only specific ones. Likewise, it is unknown whether existing customers will have the option to upgrade to this router and, if so, whether it would entail an additional cost.
