Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman Awarded .5 Billion in Contracts for Space Development Agency’s Satellite Project

The Space Development Agency (SDA) has awarded prototype agreements worth a total of .5 billion to Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman for the development of data transport satellites as part of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. Under these contracts, each company will build 36 spacecraft that will provide encrypted connectivity and communication for warfighters globally. Lockheed Martin’s contract is valued at 6 million, while Northrop Grumman’s contract is valued at 3 million.

These satellites are part of the third-generation project called Tranche 2, which involves the deployment of a large number of small satellites in low Earth orbit to enhance communication and detect missile threats. The ultimate goal of the SDA is to significantly shorten the time it takes to develop and launch satellites by following a spiral development and proliferation strategy.

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman are experienced in building SDA’s transport satellites, having previously worked on earlier versions. Lockheed Martin has provided 10 spacecraft for Tranche 0 and is currently building 42 for Tranche 1. Northrop Grumman is also working on 42 transport satellites for Tranche 1, with the first ones expected to launch in late 2024.

The SDA plans to launch the 72 transport satellites developed by Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman in 2026. While these satellites will be similar to previous versions, they will incorporate advanced tactical communication technology.

Lockheed Martin recently opened a small satellite processing facility where it will build and test SDA satellites, as well as other spacecraft and technology demonstrators. The company is committed to supporting SDA’s strategy for faster delivery by leveraging its network of suppliers and small businesses.

The development of a low Earth orbit communications architecture that meets the needs of warfighters is a complex task, and Northrop Grumman aims to contribute its extensive experience in military satellite communication to help make SDA’s vision a reality.

Overall, the contracts awarded to Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman mark an important step forward in the SDA’s efforts to build a robust and cost-effective satellite network for the military.
