Hanwha Ocean partners with American Bureau of Shipping for digital shipbuilding verification

Hanwha Ocean Co., a South Korean shipbuilding company, has announced an agreement with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to test and verify digital production technology, cybersecurity, self-navigation, and smart ship solutions. This partnership aims to boost output efficiency for Hanwha Ocean by verifying digital shipbuilding technology until 2026.

Digital shipbuilding involves the use of virtual reality (VR) in all production phases. By obtaining ABS certification, Hanwha Ocean can significantly enhance the reputation of its products, making it easier to win orders from global shipping companies. Additionally, the ABS seal of approval gives the shipbuilder a competitive advantage in the emerging market for autonomous vessels and reduces costs by streamlining production efficiency.

As part of the accord, Hanwha Ocean will conduct joint research with ABS to certify its own smart shipyard and vessel technologies. The initial objective is to obtain evaluation approval for the product design and manufacturing of a self-developed system for vessel draft measurement, which utilizes artificial intelligence analysis of images.

Following this, the collaboration will progress to technical cooperation for securing certification in remote vessel inspection, cybersecurity, safety measures, and economic operation through the use of the smart ship solution HS4.

This partnership represents a significant step for Hanwha Ocean in harnessing digital technologies to enhance its shipbuilding processes. The collaboration with ABS will not only improve the company’s market position but also contribute to the advancement of digital shipbuilding in the global maritime industry.
