Eutelsat Signs Agreement with Thaicom Subsidiary to Expand Service in Asia

Eutelsat has entered into a partnership with Space Tech Innovation Limited (STI), a subsidiary of Thaicom, to lease half the capacity on a new software-defined satellite over Asia. This agreement will allow Eutelsat to increase its service coverage in the region.

Under the partnership, Eutelsat will lease and operate half of the capacity on the geostationary SDS (satellite data system) during the satellite’s lifetime. STI will procure the satellite, which belongs to a new generation of satellites that offer instant in-orbit adjustment and reconfiguration. This technology optimizes the use of resources for both the operator and the customer.

By leveraging this new satellite, Eutelsat will expand its in-orbit assets by approximately 50 Gbps of incremental capacity over Asia. The SDS’s performance, flexibility in coverage, bandwidth allocation, and power levels will ensure high-quality service for Eutelsat’s customers in the Asian region. The satellite will also be compatible with Eutelsat and OneWeb’s multi-orbit approach, combining GEO and LEO orbits.

Eva Berneke, CEO of Eutelsat Communications, expresses confidence in the partnership with Thaicom, highlighting the strategic location of the 119.5° East position to address the entire Asian region. She also emphasizes the innovative investment approach and Thaicom’s extensive experience as a leading satellite operator in Asia.

Thaicom’s CEO, Patompob Suwansiri, sees the partnership as a significant milestone for the company. He emphasizes the secure utilization of 50% of their new satellite at the 119.5 degrees East orbital slot and the potential for synergies between the two organizations in capturing future growth opportunities.

The partnership between Eutelsat and Thaicom subsidiary STI will enable Eutelsat to meet the growing demand for connectivity in Asia and further solidify Thaicom’s position as a leading space tech company in the region.
