AT&T Expands Its Internet Air Service into More Markets

AT&T, focusing on fiber deployment, is expanding its Internet Air service into a dozen more markets. This move shows a shift in AT&T’s approach to fixed wireless access (FWA), an area where Verizon and T-Mobile have made significant progress. While Verizon and T-Mobile have acquired nearly 6 million FWA customers in just two years, AT&T has been slower in this regard. However, with the soft-launch of its 5G FWA service, called Internet Air, in April, AT&T is now expanding its availability to additional markets.

The new regions where Internet Air will be offered either lack fiber deployment from AT&T or have insufficient fiber infrastructure. In these cases, AT&T is filling in the gaps with the FWA alternative. The markets include major cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Las Vegas, among others.

AT&T is offering Internet Air for per month, guaranteeing no price increases for a year. The telecom company promises transparency with no hidden fees and a seamless self-install customer experience.

AT&T previously emphasized the importance of fiber in its wireline broadband priorities. However, the company acknowledges the need for FWA as an interim solution for customers still on copper DSL, estimated to be around 6.2 million. FWA provides download speeds ranging from 40 Mbps to 140 Mbps. AT&T aims to retain these customers and eventually transition them to fiber once it becomes available.

The expansion of AT&T’s Internet Air service highlights the company’s growing interest in FWA. While AT&T remains committed to fiber deployment, it is recognizing the value of FWA as a viable solution in the interim.
