10,000 People in Southwest Wisconsin to Receive High-Speed Internet

Nearly 10,000 individuals in southwest Wisconsin will soon have access to affordable and high-speed internet, thanks to a million investment. The Reedsburg Utility Commission, utilizing the ReConnect Loan funds provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, will be responsible for installing a fiber-to-the-premises network.

The network installation is expected to benefit 9,661 people, 319 businesses, 689 farms, and eight educational facilities located in Richland, Dane, Iowa, Juneau, and Sauk counties. Julie Lassa, Wisconsin State Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development, emphasized that the network will pave the way for numerous advantages.

Reliable high-speed internet will connect business owners to a wider customer base and open up new markets. It will expand educational opportunities for students, allowing for enhanced online learning experiences. Additionally, individuals will be able to access necessary medical care without having to leave their homes.

To qualify for funding through the ReConnect Program, applicants must cater to a rural area lacking access to internet speeds of at least 100 megabits per second (Mbps) for downloads and 20 Mbps for uploads. The ReConnect Loan program, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, seeks to bridge the digital divide by improving internet accessibility in rural areas across the country.
