Verizon Gains Early Access to 5G C-Band Spectrum, Expands Network Nationwide

Verizon has announced that it has gained access to the full amount of 5G C-band spectrum it secured at auction four months ahead of schedule. This development allows Verizon to significantly expand and enhance its 5G ultra wideband network across the country.

By gaining access to this additional spectrum, Verizon will more than double and, in some markets, triple the available bandwidth for its 5G services. This increased capacity will accommodate more customers, enable higher data speeds, and support a greater range of services.

Notably, Verizon will now be able to offer 5G home broadband and business internet services to a larger customer base. Joe Russo, EVP and President of Global Networks and Technology for Verizon, stated that this early access puts them ahead of schedule and will make 5G Ultra Wideband available to more Americans.

Since deploying 5G service using C-band spectrum, Verizon has made high-speed 5G accessible to over 222 million individuals across 359 markets. Additionally, more than 40 million households now have access to Verizon’s home internet services, with an impressive 2.3 million customers subscribing to their Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) solutions.

Verizon won C-band licenses for between 140-200 MHz in all available markets and began deploying 60 MHz in the first 46 areas in 2022. As additional spectrum cleared by satellite companies outside of these areas, Verizon expanded its 5G ultra wideband coverage in many more markets across the country.

With final clearance from satellite incumbents, Verizon can now utilize the entirety of its licensed C-band spectrum, averaging 161 MHz coast to coast, with some markets accessing a full 200 MHz. The company has been deploying equipment capable of utilizing the full 200 MHz bandwidth, allowing customers to benefit from the increased capacity in the immediate future with a software update.

Specifically, Verizon now has access to a minimum of 140 MHz of total spectrum nationwide and up to 200 MHz in 158 mostly rural markets, covering nearly 40 million people. This expanded spectrum will enhance Verizon’s broadband solutions, particularly for rural areas.

Accelerated access to spectrum holdings will provide greater capacity and faster speeds in major metro areas where Verizon’s network is already highly regarded. By expanding coverage, Verizon can introduce 5G ultra wideband service to even more rural and suburban areas.

Overall, Verizon’s early access to the C-band spectrum allows for significant network expansion, improved service offerings, and an enhanced 5G experience for customers across the United States.
