Tata Communications Challenges Rs 991.5 Crore License Fee Demand by DoT

Tata Communications has challenged the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) demand for a license fee of Rs 991.5 crore in the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT). The demand letter, dated August 8, 2023, relates to license fee demands for international long-distance and internet service provider for the financial years 2006-07 and 2007-08.

In response to the challenge, TDSAT has directed the DoT not to take any coercive action until the next hearing. Tata Communications mentioned in a filing with the BSE that they have already included the disputed amount as part of their contingent liabilities for the quarter ended June 30, 2023.

The company remains committed to resolving the dispute through the legal process and will continue to comply with all applicable laws and regulations. This development adds to the ongoing legal battles between telecom companies and the DoT over license fee demands.

Tata Communications is a leading global provider of telecom and digital infrastructure services. It operates under the Tata Group, one of India’s largest business conglomerates. The company offers a wide range of services including network services, cloud communications, and security solutions.

The outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings will have significant implications for the telecom industry and its stakeholders. The TDSAT’s directive to the DoT not to take any action until the next hearing provides temporary relief for Tata Communications, but the final resolution remains uncertain.
