Starlink Revolutionizes Internet Connectivity in Remote Parts of Alaska

Flat white Starlink antennas are revolutionizing internet connectivity in remote parts of Alaska. Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, launched thousands of low-orbit satellites into space since 2019, completely transforming the internet infrastructure across the state. Despite its imperfections, such as diminishing strength with increased bandwidth competition, Starlink internet has become faster and more reliable with the addition of more satellites.

While satellite-delivered internet is not as fast or stable as fiber-optic internet, Alaskan telecommunications companies are extending hundreds of miles of fiber-optic cables across rural areas with the help of federal investments. However, the recent destruction of a subsea fiber cable due to sea ice prompted more people to switch to Starlink for internet access in June.

In Southwest Alaska, an Alaska Native corporation representing shareholders from ten villages along the Kuskokwim River has invested in Starlink systems to bridge the digital divide in the region. The corporation covers the cost of the terminal and hook-up gear, while families pay a monthly bill of . The speeds provided by Starlink are comparable to those in Anchorage, bringing life-changing internet access to communities that have long struggled with reliability and affordability.

Starlink’s growth in Alaska is attributed to SpaceX’s ability to rapidly deploy satellites in low orbits and deliver internet signals between each other and ground terminals. As of now, SpaceX has over 4,500 satellites in operation, accounting for more than half of the active units in orbit.

Starlink’s accessibility to consumers through internet orders has also contributed to its growth. In contrast, other satellite-based companies like OneWeb distribute their signals through Alaska-based internet service providers before reaching individual households. Previously, residents in small, remote communities relied on companies like Hughesnet as their only internet option.

Starlink users have found the system relatively easy to install themselves, although some have opted for professional installation. The affordability of Starlink’s faster and more dependable signal has made it a popular choice, especially for those previously paying high costs for limited data packages.

Apart from households, various industries and institutions in Alaska have also adopted Starlink, either to improve connectivity or as backup measures. State agencies, construction crews, and emergency responders use Starlink for a wide range of purposes, from credit card processing to real-time drone footage of disasters.

Overall, the arrival of Starlink in remote parts of Alaska has been met with enthusiasm and has transformed internet access in previously disconnected areas.
