Spire Global to Launch Four Satellites for GHGSat to Monitor Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Spire Global, Inc. has been awarded a Space Services contract by GHGSat to build, launch, and operate four additional 16U satellites. These satellites will carry GHGSat payloads dedicated to monitoring greenhouse gas emissions. This agreement builds upon Spire’s existing partnership with GHGSat for three 16U satellites, set to launch by the end of 2023.

Spire Space Services offers organizations the opportunity to leverage the company’s established infrastructure to enter the space industry and rapidly scale their satellite constellations. With a total addressable market estimated at billion, Spire provides development, manufacturing, launch, and operations capabilities.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, climate change poses a threat to both human well-being and planetary health. In order to secure a livable and sustainable future, immediate action is needed across all sectors to reduce emissions. Understanding the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions is crucial for governments and industries to take effective measures towards achieving net-zero goals.

The deployment of these new satellites will enhance GHGSat’s global capacity for monitoring and measuring emissions. The data collected by these satellites will be instrumental in monitoring emissions from carbon-intensive industries, including oil and gas, coal mining, waste management, and agriculture.

The launch of the four 16U satellites is currently scheduled for no earlier than 2024.
