Scientists Discover Massive Ocean Hidden Under Earth’s Crust

In yet another mind-blowing scientific revelation, researchers have uncovered the existence of a massive ocean hidden beneath the Earth’s crust. This astonishing finding adds to the list of other recent extraordinary discoveries. Scientists refer to this underground water source as ‘ringwoodite’ – a type of rock that stores water within its crystal structure.

Previously, scientists had determined that water is present inside mantle rock, but in a peculiar state that does not conform to being a liquid, solid, or gas. This unique fourth state of water has been referred to as a sponge-like state. It was in a scientific paper titled ‘Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle,’ published in 2014, where the initial findings were presented.

Geophysicist Steve Jacobsen, who was part of the team behind the discovery, explained that the crystal structure of ringwoodite possesses the remarkable ability to attract hydrogen and trap large amounts of water. This realization led the scientists to conclude that there is an immense hidden water supply approximately 400 miles beneath the Earth’s surface.

This underground ocean holds three times more water than all the oceans on the planet’s surface combined. The revelation challenges previous assumptions about the distribution of Earth’s water resources and opens the door to a deeper understanding of how the water cycle operates on a global scale.

The discovery of this hidden water source provides crucial insights into Earth’s geological processes, as well as the potential for sustaining life. Scientists have long been searching for evidence of deep water existence, and this latest revelation is a significant breakthrough in our understanding of the planet’s composition.

Moreover, this remarkable discovery is not the only recent revelation to leave scientists in awe. Researchers have recently uncovered an entirely new ecosystem residing beneath volcanic crusts with the aid of underwater robots. These ongoing significant scientific discoveries showcase the vast mysteries that continue to unfold within the natural world.
