Satellite Communication Services Have Huge Potential in 0 Billion Indian Market

Satellite communication services have a potential market in India valued at up to 0 billion, according to industry players. Currently, the space economy comprises only 2%, but it is projected to increase to 5-8% in the next 5-10 years. Experts believe that the potential for growth in this sector is enormous.

Two main challenges need to be addressed to foster the growth of satellite communication services in India. Firstly, there is a need for a single window clearance to streamline the approval process. Secondly, the industry and regulators must work together to establish a regulatory framework for non-terrestrial network integration.

However, satellite connectivity still remains a luxury due to the high cost compared to fiber. Although the cost is decreasing, it is still significantly higher than other alternatives.

The intent and opportunity to provide coverage to all areas, particularly the uncovered ones, can benefit society as a whole. Therefore, the focus should not solely be on cost but also on the intent to bridge the digital divide.

To support the growth of the industry, there should be a single window clearance for operators. Additionally, the allocation of spectrum plays a crucial role in enabling the provision of services. If the spectrum is priced unreasonably high and is non-exclusive, it limits the ability of operators to deliver affordable services to consumers.

In terms of regulations and policies, integration between terrestrial and non-terrestrial technologies is crucial. The Department of Telecommunications in India is working towards the integration of satellite and terrestrial technologies. The liberalization of regulations and the opening up of the space industry to the private sector have created new opportunities.

The Indian government has already issued GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite) licenses to two operators, and consultations are ongoing to assign licenses to two more operators. Spectrum allocation is currently under discussion.

In conclusion, the potential market for satellite communication services in India is vast, but there are challenges that need to be addressed to unlock its full potential.
