Twenty portable satellite communication kits were recently donated to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) in the Philippines. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. and OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno led the turnover ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo on August 14. The kits, donated by IT solutions provider and systems integrator DFNN, will enhance the communication capabilities of the OCD and other disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) councils across the country.

According to Nepomuceno, a reliable and resilient communication system is crucial for effective humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations. The donated equipment consists of SpaceX Starlink kits, which utilize the latest satellite technology. They are low maintenance, easy to deploy, and can be operated by a single person. The kits provide high-speed internet connectivity, supporting virtual conferences and video calls.

Defense Secretary Teodoro, who chairs the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s disaster response system. Ramon Garcia, chairman of DFNN, expressed his company’s dedication to supporting the Philippines’ disaster management capabilities. By providing the Starlink connectivity to critical government functions, especially in disaster risk reduction, DFNN aims to ensure communication reliability even during challenging times.

The OCD, as the implementing arm and secretariat of the NDRRMC, plays a vital role in providing emergency communication support to local government units affected by disasters. The donation of these portable satellite communication kits will enhance the OCD’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies and coordinate disaster management efforts nationwide.
