Northrop Grumman Selected to Build Tranche 2 Transport Layer-Beta Data Transport Satellites

Northrop Grumman Corporation has been chosen by the Space Development Agency (SDA) to develop and construct 36 data transport satellites for the next generation of its low-Earth orbit Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). These 36 satellites, known as Tranche 2 Transport Layer-Beta Data Transport Layer (T2TL Beta), will enhance the PWSA mesh network by integrating with it and providing high-data-capacity optical crosslinks. This will enable near-real-time communications for U.S. warfighters and defensive platforms worldwide.

The design of T2TL Beta builds upon the previously awarded Tranche 1 Transport Layer (T1TL) and Tranche 1 Tracking Layer (T1TRK) satellites. The addition of new broadcast and tactical waveforms will expand the capabilities of the overall PWSA system.

According to Blake Bullock, Vice President of Communication Systems at Northrop Grumman, creating a low-Earth orbit communications architecture that meets the needs of the warfighter is a complex task. However, with their extensive experience in military satellite communication and deep mission understanding, Northrop Grumman is committed to supporting SDA in realizing their vision.

In April, Northrop Grumman completed the critical design review of its T1TL design, and in May, it successfully completed optical interoperability testing. The company is on schedule to launch its first batch of 21 space vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Northrop Grumman is a global aerospace and defense technology company that provides innovative solutions to connect and protect the world. With 98,000 employees, the company is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of human exploration and solving its customers’ toughest challenges.
