North Korea Reportedly Plans Missile Tests and Spy Satellite Launch

North Korea is said to be preparing for intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests and a spy satellite launch, according to South Korea’s intelligence service. In recent months, North Korea has conducted several missile tests.

The South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) informed lawmakers that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is expected to resume weapons testing as a response to joint U.S.-South Korean military drills scheduled to begin next week. Moreover, the upcoming summit of the U.S., South Korea, and Japan, set for Friday, is also a contributing factor.

During an intelligence briefing attended by lawmakers, the NIS revealed that it had detected unusual activity at North Korean facilities. One facility is involved in the production of solid-fueled ICBMs, while another facility deals with liquid-fueled ICBMs.

The NIS also stated that North Korea may attempt to launch a spy satellite in the coming weeks to commemorate the country’s 75th anniversary on September 9th. The intelligence agency noted that North Korea has already been conducting tests on engines for this purpose. It should be noted that this would be the country’s second attempt at a spy satellite launch this year, following a failed launch in May that resulted in the satellite crashing into the ocean after liftoff.

In addition to the missile tests and satellite launch, North Korea has been issuing warnings against the U.S. and South Korea about their joint military drills, which were recently resumed.

North Korea’s most recent ICBM launch took place in July, following a previous test in April. The April launch was of particular concern as the missile was harder to detect compared to previous missiles.
