After sharing the official system requirements for Alan Wake 2 just one week before launch, Remedy Entertainment found themselves in the midst of a controversy among PC gamers. The specs stirred up concern due to the exclusion of certain graphics cards, such as the GTX 10 Series and RX 5000 Series, which lack hardware Mesh Shaders support. Additionally, even more recent and capable GPUs were seemingly designated for lower-than-expected performance.

One notable example was NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3070, which was listed as only capable of running the game at 60 frames per second when using a reconstructed 1080p resolution from 540p (with DLSS set to Performance Mode) and at Medium graphics preset. This raised questions and doubts about the game’s overall performance.

However, Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia dispelled many of these concerns in a video analysis, concluding that Alan Wake 2 is not as demanding as initially thought. He praised the game’s visuals, considering it possibly the best-looking game to date, even on Medium preset. This is due to the utilization of advanced technical features, including software ray tracing for screen space reflections and solid software global illumination. Mesh Shaders are also extensively used to enhance geometric detail.

In terms of performance, a GeForce RTX 3070 can handle the game at 1440p resolution with DLSS set to Balanced, achieving over 80 frames per second. This allows users to set graphics settings like anisotropic filtering, shadows, and reflections to High while still maintaining over 60 frames per second. Therefore, Alan Wake 2 is not the type of game that will push high-end PCs to their limits.

If players do not possess a high-end PC but still want to experience the game’s full graphical potential, Remedy Entertainment has partnered with NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW cloud platform, providing an alternative option.
