NOKIA TO EXPAND MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN WISCONSIN, CREATING 200 NEW JOBS

Vice President Kamala Harris has announced that Nokia, a Finnish multinational corporation, will be expanding its manufacturing facility in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. This move is expected to create up to 200 new jobs. Nokia’s decision to expand is attributed to the .45 billion broadband expansion program, which was included in the 2021 infrastructure law signed by President Joe Biden.

Nokia will be partnering with Sanmina, a U.S.-based electronics manufacturer, to expand Sanmina’s facility for the production of fiber-optic broadband network electronics products and optical modules. By manufacturing fiber-optic technology in the U.S., Nokia will be able to qualify its materials as “made in America,” as required by the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program.

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program is part of the .2 trillion Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act. It aims to build and deploy broadband internet networks across all 50 states, U.S. territories, and Washington, D.C.

This collaboration between Nokia and Sanmina is just one of the projects that have contributed to the improvement of economic conditions in Wisconsin over the past two years. Since Biden took office in January 2021, the number of manufacturing jobs in the Kenosha area has increased by 2,000, reaching a total of 63,700 jobs, the highest in two decades.

Wisconsin’s overall unemployment rate has also decreased since Biden took office. According to the June unemployment report from the Department of Labor, the rate dropped to 2.5% from 4.6% in 2021. The White House has stated that companies have announced billion in manufacturing investments in Wisconsin since Biden assumed office, with a focus on clean energy and biomanufacturing.

The administration estimates that the infrastructure law, combined with the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, will lead to an additional .3 billion in public infrastructure and clean energy investments in Wisconsin. These investments will primarily come in the form of tax credits for companies in “green” businesses.
