Musk’s Offer to Provide Satellite Internet to Gaza Sparks Controversy

Elon Musk has found himself in a dispute with the Israeli government after he offered to supply satellite internet to Gaza, a move that ministers claim Hamas will use for “terrorist purposes.” Musk made the announcement on social media, stating that his SpaceX Starlink satellite network would support communications in Gaza for internationally recognized aid organizations. The offer came after cellular and internet connectivity in the territory was disrupted, leaving the population disconnected during heavy airstrikes. This blackout prevented international aid agencies from communicating with their staff in Gaza and hindered civilian recovery efforts.

Dr. Anastasia Maria Loupis directly appealed to Musk for assistance, highlighting the urgent need for internet access in Gaza. Musk responded by stating that no terminals from Gaza had attempted to communicate with SpaceX’s network. However, he assured that SpaceX would only support communication links with recognized aid organizations, emphasizing that extraordinary measures would be taken to ensure that the internet service is used solely for humanitarian purposes. Musk also indicated that both the US and Israeli governments would conduct security checks before activating the terminals.

Although Elon Musk was praised for providing Starlink to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, his involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has faced scrutiny. In his biography by Walter Isaacson, it was revealed that Musk did not allow Kyiv’s forces to use Starlink for a naval drone strike, fearing potential nuclear retaliation from Russia. This incident raised questions about his role in conflicts involving satellite technology.

Furthermore, Musk’s social media activity has caused controversy. He posted a map of Iran surrounded by US flags, suggesting that Iran wanted war and making a remark about it. This post occurred shortly after the US launched airstrikes in retaliation for attacks on American bases in the Middle East. Additionally, Musk’s sympathy towards Iran and a previous post on neutralizing Crimea’s status drew criticism from Israeli social media users.

The offer to provide satellite internet to Gaza has sparked a bitter dispute between Musk and the Israeli government, with ministers raising concerns about the potential misuse of the service by Hamas. The situation remains unresolved, with further discussions and security checks expected before any connections are established.
