Jio: Connecting India with Satellite-Based Giga Fiber Service

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, the largest private mobile data network globally, recently showcased India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service. This new service, named JioSpaceFiber, aims to provide high-speed broadband to previously inaccessible areas across the country. The demonstration took place at the India Mobile Congress, and Jio plans to make the service available at affordable prices throughout India.

Currently, Jio serves over 450 million Indian consumers with high-speed fixed-line and wireless broadband services. To further boost digital inclusivity, Jio has added JioSpaceFiber to its existing lineup of broadband services, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber. With Jio, consumers and businesses can enjoy reliable, low-latency, high-speed internet and entertainment services, irrespective of their location.

In addition to providing broadband services, the satellite network will enhance Jio True5G’s availability and scale by supporting additional capacity for mobile backhaul. Jio has partnered with SES to access the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. By utilizing SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites, Jio becomes the only company capable of delivering unique gigabit, fiber-like services from space. This game-changing technology ensures scalable and affordable broadband access across India, with unprecedented reliability and service flexibility.

To demonstrate the capability of JioSpaceFiber, four remote locations in India, namely Gir Gujarat, Korba Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur Odissa, and ONGC-Jorhat Assam, have already been connected. Jio aims to connect millions of homes and businesses in India that have yet to experience broadband internet.

Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, Akash Ambani, stated that JioSpaceFiber will enable everyone to participate fully in the digital society, providing gigabit access to government services, education, healthcare, and entertainment.

SES’s Chief Strategy Officer, John-Paul Hemingway, expressed their support for India’s Digital India initiative, highlighting their unique solution that aims to deliver multiple gigabits per second of throughput to any location in the country. He looks forward to witnessing the digital transformation that JioSpaceFiber will bring, even in rural areas.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, a subsidiary of Jio Platforms Limited, has built an advanced all-IP data-strong network using 4G LTE and 5G technologies. This future-proof network can be easily upgraded to support emerging technologies like 6G and beyond. With its ecosystem of network, devices, applications, content, and affordable tariffs, Jio has revolutionized the Indian digital services space, bringing the vision of Digital India to life for 1.4 billion Indians and positioning India as a global digital economy leader.
