Intel Plans to Lay Off Over 300 Employees in California

Semiconductor giant Intel has revealed plans to lay off more than 300 employees across three office campuses in California. The roles affected by the layoffs are in key areas for Intel, including AI, cloud computing, and GPUs. The company is implementing these cost-cutting measures as part of its ongoing campaign.

According to notices received by California’s Employment Development Department, Intel intends to start terminating the affected employees on August 31. However, the company has noted that some of the impacted staff may be relocated to new positions.

These layoffs are required to comply with California’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which mandates advance notice to employees affected by office closures or mass layoffs. Intel has not responded to requests for comment.

This round of job cuts is part of the company’s efforts to reduce spending, which were announced by CEO Pat Gelsinger last fall. The aim is to navigate a slowdown in demand while pursuing a turnaround plan. Gelsinger stated during an earnings call in October that the decision was challenging but necessary to balance investments in leadership, technology development, and product capacity in other locations.

The layoffs will affect a total of 315 employees, with 175 at the Santa Clara headquarters, 89 in Folsom, and 51 in San Jose. In July, an additional 78 Intel employees in Santa Clara were laid off. As of the end of 2022, Intel had 131,900 employees, with more than 13,500 based in California.

The roles impacted by the layoffs cover various areas including AI, cloud computing, and GPUs. This includes GPU software development engineers, graphics hardware engineers, AI software engineers, and cloud software and solution engineers. The layoffs also affected a general manager and an Intel fellow, a prestigious title for technical employees. Several other roles, including marketing managers, engineering managers, and system-on-chip design engineers, were also cut.

These job cuts extend to software roles as well, such as system software development engineers and software engineering managers. The layoffs follow Intel’s ongoing cost-cutting campaign, targeting highly competitive areas that are strategically significant for the company.
