Indian Telecom Giants Expected to Increase Workforce

The hiring activity in the three Telcos gained momentum in FY23

Top three Indian Telecom giants, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and Bharti Airtel, are projected to hire up to 25% more employees in the current fiscal year. In the previous year, these companies had already increased their staff by 35%. Currently, the focus is on expanding 5G coverage, monetization, and deepening 4G coverage. The hiring activity in the telecom companies gained momentum in FY23 after a slowdown in FY22 due to the easing of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to industry experts, the demand for 5G has contributed significantly to the hiring activity, creating a substantial number of job opportunities. Additionally, the digitization efforts by enterprises have resulted in increased telecom needs. The annual reports of Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea show that their total headcounts by the end of FY23 were 95,326, 64,407, and 15,604 respectively.

The roles of network engineers, network architects, cloud computing experts, data scientists, data analysts, and cybersecurity specialists have experienced a surge in demand. The key areas witnessing hiring growth include IoT/IIoT, network infrastructure, network upgradation, network migration, and network security. Profiles in these domains are reported to command around 12% higher pay packages.

Contractual hiring has also increased in companies like Vodafone Idea and Airtel. Airtel hired 50,699 employees on a contractual basis, while Vodafone hired 6,234 workers. The increase in contractual hiring for Vodafone Idea may also be a cost-saving measure, as contractual workers typically receive lower pay scales in most profiles.

Overall, the hiring activity in the Indian Telecom sector has gained momentum, driven by the need for 5G expansion and digitization efforts by enterprises. The increase in workforce is expected to support the growth and development of these telecom giants in the current financial year.
