Google Messages Prepares for Satellite Connectivity

Android 14 is set to include satellite connectivity, as revealed last year and recently discovered in the code. However, having Android 14 alone is not sufficient to connect to a satellite; the right hardware is also needed.

In anticipation of this connectivity, Google Messages has added user interfaces for sending satellite messages. Neïl Rahmouni shared a screenshot on Twitter, showing that the text bar is labeled as ‘Satellite message’. Although there are some imperfections, such as the character limit displaying -1 even with no text input, it indicates Google’s intention to enable satellite connectivity in the near future.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced satellite connectivity for its Exynos modems, which will be featured in the upcoming Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro as well as various Samsung phones. While older phones won’t have satellite connectivity, future generations may offer support.

Samsung took a step ahead of Apple’s iPhone 14 in terms of satellite messaging capabilities. While the iPhone 14 allows for preprogrammed SOS messages, Samsung announced the ability to send any message via satellite. It appears that Google Messages is following in Samsung’s footsteps, as the UI discovered by Rahmouni suggests full keyboard access for composing messages.

The debate arises over the effectiveness of freely typed emergency messages compared to predetermined ones. While a personally written message may provide more clarity and nuance, depending on the situation, choosing from a list of preprogrammed options could be quicker and easier.

First responders caution against overreliance on this technology, as it may create a false sense of safety and security. Chris Boyer, executive director of the United States’ National Association for Search and Rescue, warns that people may become overconfident and incorrectly assess risks, potentially leading to tragic consequences. Moreover, the surge in unnecessary emergency calls resulting from the availability of satellite messaging technology can strain search and rescue resources and cause delays in responding to genuine emergencies.

While satellite connectivity in Android 14 and messaging apps like Google Messages can provide an additional layer of safety, it is important to use these features responsibly and avoid unnecessary risks.
