Finnair has announced that it will replace its existing Finnair Plus points with Avios as its loyalty currency starting in early 2024. Avios is the same loyalty currency used by British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling, and Qatar Airways. Once the transition is complete, Finnair Plus award points will be converted to Avios at a ratio of 3:2. The value of current Finnair Plus points will remain the same.

Not only will Finnair be changing its loyalty currency, but it will also shift the Finnair Plus program to a revenue-based earning platform. This means that Avios and elite status will be awarded based on the amount spent rather than the distance flown. While this change may not be welcomed by all frequent flyers, it is expected to create better redemption opportunities across partner airlines.

As part of the overhaul, Finnair will increase the number of award seats available on flights. At least four award seats will be guaranteed on flights within Europe, and at least eight award seats will be available on long-haul flights. Finnair Plus members will also receive extra rewards, such as upgrade benefits, upon reaching specific point limits based on their elite status.

In addition, Finnair Plus members will enjoy complimentary internet access for messaging on short-haul European flights operated by the narrow-body Airbus fleet, regardless of their elite status. Furthermore, a new Finnair lounge with a dedicated space for top-tier members will be created on the Schengen side of Helsinki Airport in 2024.

The Finnair Plus loyalty program currently boasts over four million members worldwide. More information about the exact date of the changes is expected to be announced by Finnair in the coming months.
