Cryptocurrency-Powered Helium Mobile Offers /month Unlimited Wireless Service

Helium Mobile is a real service offered by Nova Labs, a startup focused on utilizing different types of spectrum for wireless connectivity. This cryptocurrency-powered 5G network operates through crowd-sourced mini cell towers that make use of unlicensed spectrum. For just a month, users can enjoy unlimited wireless talk, text, and data, all backed by T-Mobile’s nationwide network.

The concept behind Helium Mobile is based on Nova Labs’ Dynamic Coverage. This means that users’ phones tap into Nova’s cellular gateways, which broadcast unlicensed radio airwaves. Individuals set up these mini cell towers and receive MOBILE cryptocurrency tokens in exchange. If a phone goes out of range of one of these gateways, it seamlessly connects to T-Mobile’s network.

Nova Labs is just one of many startups aiming to provide an alternative to traditional cellular service by utilizing unlicensed spectrum. Large carriers like T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon invest billions in licensed spectrum, giving them exclusive rights to use the airwaves. Helium Mobile hopes to use cheaper unlicensed spectrum to alleviate the strain on cellular capacity, a concept even the major carriers have explored due to the rising costs of building standard cellular networks.

Nova Labs claims to have deployments in 1,500 US cities, although the cost of the mini cell towers, such as the 9 indoor model, may be a challenge. Encouraging enough users to invest in these cells will be crucial to achieve wider range coverage. Offering cryptocurrency as an incentive might not be as effective as it once was.

The launch of Helium Mobile is initially taking place in Miami, decided upon by community members. Interested individuals in the area can sign up for the service. Nova Labs chose Miami due to its existing Helium Network and its thriving cryptocurrency development.

Subscribers of Helium Mobile have the opportunity to earn cryptocurrency by providing anonymized network data to Nova Labs. This data will be used to improve the service and identify any coverage gaps.

Nova Labs was formed through the merger of FreedomFI, an investor in utilizing unlicensed spectrum, and Helium Network, which aimed to build a decentralized wireless infrastructure. The Helium equipment operates on CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service), and many popular phone models, including the latest iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S, are compatible.

T-Mobile did not comment on the launch of Helium Mobile.
