Capella Space, through its subsidiary Capella Federal, has been granted the Proliferated Low Earth Orbit Satellite-Based Services (PLEO) contract by the U.S. Space Systems Command (SSC). This award allows Capella to collaborate more effectively with SSC and the U.S. Space Force in providing global 24/7, all-weather imagery for critical missions.

As one of the initial commercial earth observation companies to work under this new government commercial satellite services procurement model, Capella aims to enhance U.S. resilience in space using advanced commercial technologies. The contract’s performance period is from July 2023 to July 2028, with a potential additional five-year option.

Capella Space’s CEO and founder, Payam Banazadeh, expresses excitement about the expansion of their collaboration with the U.S. government as the first American company to own and operate a commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) constellation. Through this award, Capella aims to supply timely and high-resolution SAR data to support U.S. Space Force missions using their rapidly growing constellation.

The U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), through the Commercial Satellite Communications Office (CSCO), granted the contract. CSCO serves as a central marketplace for SATCOM services operated by the U.S. Space Force’s field command, the Space Systems Command.

Capella Federal, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Capella Space, supports U.S. government and defense agency customers by providing expanded access to Capella’s SAR imagery with increased security and reliability on-demand. Capella Federal customizes the delivery of SAR imagery to fulfill the heightened security and facility clearance needs of its U.S. government, defense, and intelligence customers. Capella’s technology enables government agencies to gather data and images of Earth irrespective of weather conditions or time of day, enabling critical decision-making for national security and facilitating global transparency.
