Calder Way Project Begins Construction as State College Revitalizes Downtown Corridor

The Calder Way Project in downtown State College is set to undergo a .5 million revitalization. The project aims to create a dedicated bicycle lane and shared pedestrian path, as well as improve the overall streetscape ambiance. The project will be completed in five phases, with the final phase scheduled to start in 2027.

Starting this week, construction crews will begin upgrading and replacing utilities and infrastructure on Calder Way between McAllister and South Fraser streets. This initial phase is expected to be disruptive but necessary. Noise, traffic changes, and inconveniences should be anticipated.

The borough officials assure that the inconveniences will be worth it once the project is complete. The refurbished Calder Way will span from High Street to Atherton Street and will prioritize the safety and convenience of cyclists and pedestrians. Emergency vehicles, essential services, and parking will still have access to the corridor.

The project stems from the State College Downtown Master Plan, which was adopted in 2013. The desire to create a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians, along with the need to replace aging utilities, led to the decision to undertake the revitalization project. Each year, a new stretch of Calder Way and connected streets will undergo construction and utility work, ultimately resulting in the installation of a bike lane and streetscape improvements.

Phase 1 of the project, beginning this week, will focus on Calder Way from McAllister Street to South Fraser Street. Phase 2 will extend from South Fraser Street to Atherton Street in 2024. Phase 3 will cover McAllister Street to South Garner Street, Phase 4 from South Garner to Hetzel Street, and Phase 5 in 2027 from Hetzel to High Street.

The total cost of the project is expected to exceed .5 million, with utility companies and state/federal grants covering a portion of the expenses. The borough’s contribution is still to be determined.

Construction for Phase 1 will take place from Monday to Saturday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and on Sundays between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. To minimize disruptions, there will be no-work days during Penn State home football games, First Fridays, and other significant events.

Although businesses in the construction area may be impacted, the borough has made efforts to minimize the effects. Letters were hand-delivered to over 100 downtown businesses, and discussions have been held to address concerns and find solutions.

The Calder Way Project is expected to transform the heart of State College and benefit visitors, residents, and businesses alike. The completion date will be determined as each phase of construction progresses.
