Application for 5G Mobile Phone Mast in Warrington Rejected

An application seeking prior approval permission for the installation of a 17m high slim-line monopole supporting six antennas, along with equipment cabinets at the base, was submitted to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department. The proposed mast was intended to provide the latest 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies to enhance coverage and capacity in the area of Woolston.

However, the application was refused by the council. The reason for the refusal was that the proposed development would be located too close to two street trees that are considered assets for WBC Green Infrastructure. The council believed that the installation of the mast would potentially damage and put future pressure on the pruning or removal of a mature poplar tree and a young lime tree, which make a positive contribution to the visual amenity and character of the area.

The applicant, CK Hutchinson Networks UK, argued that widespread coverage of mobile connectivity is essential for people and businesses, and the proposed site was the most suitable option that balanced operational need with local and national planning policies.

In its proposal, CK Hutchinson Networks UK highlighted that mobile telecoms networks are now ubiquitous throughout the UK, and it is expected that individuals can connect and use their mobile phones wherever they are. The installation of this 5G mast was aimed at meeting the increasing demand and providing 5G coverage in the Woolston area.

While the applicant emphasized the benefits of enhanced connectivity, the council made the decision to reject the application based on concerns about the potential negative impact on the local environment and the preservation of the trees.

As it stands, the installation of the 5G mobile phone mast in the proposed location has been deemed unsustainable and unacceptable according to the council’s planning policies.
