Apple Rumored to Revamp AirPods Lineup with New Variants

Apple’s popular AirPods are facing competition in the earbuds market, prompting the tech giant to consider refreshing its lineup. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed in his Power On newsletter that Apple has plans to introduce two new variants of its entry-level AirPods, along with a second generation of the AirPods Max headphones.

The first variant of the entry-level AirPods is expected to launch in late 2024, featuring a new design, improved audio, and a better fit. These AirPods will also be equipped with a USB Type-C port, as Apple plans to phase out its proprietary lightning port. Additionally, the case for the AirPods may receive an update.

Apple will also introduce a higher-end version of the standard AirPods, which will reportedly include Active Noise Cancellation, a feature currently available only on the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. The second and third generations of AirPods will be phased out, and two pricing tiers for the base AirPods will be introduced.

Gurman suggests that the higher-end variant may come with a case that includes speakers, allowing users to play Find My Alerts, making it easier to locate a lost case.

The AirPods Max, Apple’s on-ear headphones, are also expected to receive an upgrade. While no significant hardware changes are predicted, the new AirPods Max may include a USB Type-C port and new color options. The release is slated for late 2024.

Gurman also mentions that a redesigned version of the AirPods Pro is in the works, featuring updated internals and aesthetics. However, these are not expected to launch until 2025.
