Alternative Full Fibre Broadband ISPs Now Covering Over a Quarter of the UK

The latest data from Thinkbroadband’s database shows that alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, also known as AltNets, now cover more than a quarter (25.14%) of the UK. This is an increase from 23.64% at the end of June 2023.

Peterborough leads the way as the top location where AltNets dominate, with 84% coverage. It’s important to note that the data focuses on consumer-facing AltNets and excludes established players such as Virgin Media (VMO2), Openreach, and KCOM. However, some may consider KCOM to be an AltNet now, which would likely position Hull at the top of the list.

As of Q2 2023, 53% of the UK had access to FTTP/B networks from any operator, and this rises to 76% for gigabit-capable broadband, which includes both FTTP/B and Hybrid Fibre Coax.

The data takes into account the overlapping nature of some roll-outs and excludes areas where service is “coming soon” or is in a pre-order state. Only areas where the service is live and ready for use by ISPs are considered.

While nexfibre’s FTTP coverage is technically an AltNet, it is currently measured as part of Virgin Media until other ISPs begin offering related packages.

The top 10 local UK councils with the most AltNet FTTP coverage are as follows:

1. City of Peterborough – 84.00%
2. Hammersmith and Fulham – 83.35%
3. Coventry District – 82.13%
4. Southend-on-Sea – 77.70%
5. City of Westminster – 77.34%
6. Milton Keynes – 77.31%
7. Tower Hamlets – 74.48%
8. Hyndburn District – 73.54%
9. Newham – 73.54%
10. Aberdeen City – 72.96%

The major AltNets contributing to the above figures are CityFibre, CommunityFibre, Hyperoptic, and Netomnia (YouFibre). These providers have a significant impact, with estimated premises ranging from 556,000 to 2.3 million.

Many of these locations are urban areas, where AltNets can provide additional and often more affordable and faster gigabit-capable network choices for local homes.
