A Teacher in Sarawak Purchases Starlink Kit to Provide Internet Access for Students

A teacher in a rural area of Sarawak, Malaysia has taken it upon himself to purchase a Starlink satellite broadband kit in order to provide internet access for his students. The teacher’s selfless act gained attention on social media after a video was shared on TikTok, showing him carrying a box containing the kit.

Starlink is a satellite broadband service operated by Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX. It uses low earth orbit satellites to offer high-speed broadband with lower latency compared to regular satellite broadband services. The teacher bought the Starlink kit with the hope of enhancing his students’ learning experience, as reliable internet access is hard to come by in many remote and rural areas of Sarawak.

In another TikTok video, the teacher mentioned that he purchased the Starlink kit without any help from others. He expressed his gratitude towards the officials who brought Starlink into Malaysia, acknowledging that the device can greatly improve internet access.

The Sarawak government has been evaluating the coverage and commercial aspects of Starlink’s satellite broadband service for possible use in the state. The Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Julaihi Narawi, welcomed the potential benefits of Starlink’s connection but emphasized the need to assess its coverage area and commercial model.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the competitive prices and affordability of Starlink’s services compared to other similar options in the country. The Malaysian government, along with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), conducted assessments before allowing the use of Starlink services, as they recognized the need to address internet access issues in remote areas.

The teacher’s initiative to purchase the Starlink kit showcases his dedication to his students’ education. It also sheds light on the challenges faced by students in remote areas and the potential of satellite broadband services like Starlink to bridge the digital divide.
