Will GDPR Hinder SpaceX’s Starlink Aviation Service Adoption in Europe?

The implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by the European Union could pose a challenge for SpaceX’s Starlink Aviation service in Europe, suggested Lukas Bucher, Lufthansa Technik’s head of products and program, special engineering services. Under GDPR, any data that can be linked to EU residents must be processed in accordance with the regulation, including obtaining consent. While anonymized information is exempt, this may limit the appeal of the service to airlines with frequent flyer programs, as they would lose the direct relationship with passengers. Bucher highlighted the importance of maintaining the direct relationship to passengers, as mandated by GDPR, and questioned whether SpaceX could obtain passenger consent while maintaining a portal-free and frictionless experience.

Bucher also noted that judging Starlink Aviation based on its implementation aboard JSX’s ERJs might not be accurate, given the difference in network load and the fact that JSX is not a major airline. He commented on SpaceX’s airline customers, mentioning that the announced partnerships, including Hawaiian Airlines, have not materialized yet.

Bucher further discussed the challenges of implementing inflight connectivity systems, particularly in terms of software and payment mechanisms. He emphasized that these are the main obstacles to seamless connectivity, rather than the hardware components. SpaceX aims to overcome these challenges by providing a free and frictionless experience, but ultimately, someone has to pay for the service.

Bucher mentioned the importance of the Seamless Air Alliance in resolving software and payment issues. Lufthansa Technik has been a member of the alliance for several years and supports their efforts to improve the quality of service and experience for passengers.

Overall, the adoption of SpaceX’s Starlink Aviation service in Europe may be hindered by GDPR requirements and the challenges associated with software and payment mechanisms. The company will need to find a way to obtain passenger consent and address the issue of who will bear the cost of the service.
